New payment instruments are putting pressure on the systems for acceptance at the point of Interaction, and the associated stakeholders must find the best strategy for evolution of these systems. Solid and flexible standards are key enablers of a smooth and futureproof evolution of such complex systems. The webinar, starting with big picture, will then focus on the work ongoing at the nexo standards organization about the topic.
Key Take-Aways
Point of Interaction (POI) systems are due to evolve to allow merchants to accept multiple and new payment instruments, especially Instant Credit Transfer (ICT)
Instant Credit Transfer (ICT) is a disruptive payment instrument with cash-like features and significant impacts on financial ecosystems.
Most ICT implementations focus on P2P and the few solutions for merchant payments do not yet allow for a user experience to the level of card payments.
For a good user experience of ICT acceptance, new features are needed :
-
- Automated management of Payment requests, regardless of the used channel
-
- Automatic notification of beneficiary account credit to the POI System </aside>
To fill the gap, the nexo standards organization is actively working to standardize ICT acceptance for merchants, managing payment requests and payee notifications
The acceptance landscape in Europe shows significant fragmentation. However, EPI (European Payments Initiative) and EuroPA (European Payments Alliance) initiatives are opening the door to a genuine sovereign alternative to non-European solutions. All that was missing was cooperation between the two initiatives, which has been confirmed since 23rd June 2025. We now await the end of summer to discover the proposed interoperability solutions.
